How other drivers can support motorcyclists

Whether you’re on two wheels or four, we all play a part in keeping our roads safe.

By being aware of bikers and how to drive to keep them safe, other vehicle users such as those in cars, vans, lorries and more, can help ensure that everyone gets home safely.

A few simple things to help:

• Give riders a bit more space
  What might feel like a small bump or gust of wind in a car can have a much bigger impact on a bike. That extra space gives riders time to deal with it safely.
• Let them use the road properly
  Bikes might be smaller, but they still need room to position themselves safely. Never force a motorcyclist to share your lane or put them in a situation where they are forced into small spaces.
• Expect filtering
  It’s perfectly legal for motorcyclists to filter through traffic when it’s safe to do so. If you see one approaching, a little space can help everything flow more smoothly.
• Look twice
  Bikes are easy to miss - especially at junctions or when turning. A second look can be the difference during key moments.
• Check your blind spots
  Don’t just rely on mirrors or sensors - take a quick glance over your shoulder before moving across.
• Think about the conditions
  Poor weather affects everyone, but it can hit bikers harder. Giving them more space in rain, wind, or poor visibility helps them adjust safely.
• Signal clearly and in good time
  Riders rely on reading what others are doing to help protect them as vulnerable road users. A clear signal, for a minimum of three seconds before turning the wheel gives them the chance to react and plan ahead.

Most riders are just out enjoying the same roads as everyone else. By making a few small adjustments, you help create a safer, smoother experience for everyone.
