Police are asking for a member of the public to make contact after he flagged down passing officers to report an assault.
Officers on patrol had been stopped by a man to say he had witnessed another man assault a woman around midnight on London Road, Gloucester.
This happened near to the BP Garage on Friday 2 December going into the early hours of Saturday 3 December.
Officers then went to find those involved. A man was arrested and a woman was safeguarded after she had sustained facial injuries.
Investigating officers are now keen to speak to the witness who reported this to officers, as his details were not taken at the time.
The man who helped was near to St Peter's Church and described as being white, aged under 35, had dark hair and was also wearing dark clothing.
