Officers from the Major Crime Investigation Team have today (Wednesday 18 March) arrested a man in connection with a number of violent sexual offences committed against a woman more than 35 years ago.
The 69-year-old was arrested from a property in Gloucester on suspicion of rape, kidnap, indecent assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Specialist officers and police staff are now carrying out a search of the property as part of the investigation.
The offences were committed during the 1970s and 80s.
The victim has been informed of the arrest and has been offered access to specialist support services.
The man is currently in police custody where he will be interviewed by detectives and while further enquiries take place.
Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Usher said: "These violent sexual offences were committed over a sustained period and have had a lasting impact on the victim.
"While decades may have passed, we continue to investigate these offences due to the seriousness of them as we to try to hold the individual responsible accountable."
