Arrest following report of altercation at Gloucester football match

Police were called to a report that a man had been threatened with a knife in Gloucester last night (Tuesday 17 September).

An altercation had reportedly taken place during a football match at a pitch belonging to St Peter's High School in Tuffley at around 9.30pm.

The game was a private letting by members of the public and was unrelated to the school itself.

A man playing in the match is said to have punched another man before threatening him with a knife. The suspect then got into a car and left the scene before officers arrived.

Following further information, officers worked with colleagues from West Mercia Police to identify a man who was later arrested by officers in the Gloucester area.

Inspector Ash Gardner, of the Gloucester Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Following a report of a nasty incident during a football match, officers worked quickly to identify and arrest a suspect.

"This was a game involving adults and no children were involved in the incident.

“We’re aware of social media posts concerning the incident. We’d ask people not to speculate while investigations continue. If anyone has any information, please contact us directly.

“People should be able to enjoy their free time activities in a safe environment. Officers will not tolerate any behaviour which threatens anyone in our communities.”

A 30-year-old man from Gloucester has been arrested on suspicion of assault causing actual bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon and affray. He remains in custody while investigations continue.
