Schoolbeat is a safeguarding programme delivered by police officers within schools. Its aim is to prevent children becoming victims of crime by helping them to recognise new and emerging dangers. It also works to help young people to make safe and positive decisions and to reduce the number of children from becoming offenders in the future.
A key part of the programme is to build trust between school aged children, police and other support agencies. Schoolbeat Officers, or SBOs, will also offer supportive advice as early as possible and can carry out positive interventions where needed.
We know that by increasing young people’s confidence in talking to police officers, the number of young people who become victims of crime and future offenders reduces. This was a key reason for Gloucestershire Constabulary becoming part of the programme in April 2018.
