Officers are appealing for a man who helped a security guard in a Barton Street store in Gloucester earlier this week to come forward.
At around 5pm on Monday 30 August a man assaulted a member of staff by pushing them and grabbing the back of their neck.
He was subsequently detained by a security guard and another man who assisted. It has been reported that the detained man then used racial slurs against the member of the public who was helping, however they left prior to police arrival and he has not yet been identified.
Investigating officers are keen to speak to the man who helped and any other witnesses to the incident.
A 45-year-old man from Gloucester was arrested on suspicion of assault and later released on police bail until later this month while enquiries continue.
