Response officers from Gloucestershire Police rescued a swan which had strayed on to a busy bypass during the early peak hours.

A driver reported seeing the bird on the A40 Gloucester Causeway at about 7am this morning.

It was believed to have come under the crash barrier and onto the carriageway from the nearby lake at Walham.

Officers who were trained in swan-handling captured the bird and returned it to the lake.

PC Gavin Crozier said: "The road was very busy at the time and the bird appeared to be quite distressed.

"Fortunately, we have been trained to handle swans and I was able to catch hold of it and release it back to the water.

"We find ourselves doing all kinds of things in the line of duty and in this instance, our main concerns were for public safety and the welfare of the swan. I'm glad to say no-one one was injured - human or wildlife."
