The M5 remains closed between junction 8 and 9 southbound after two linked collisions in the early hours of this morning.

Police are still carrying out investigations at the scene but believe that the incident involved five vehicles and started when a Ford Mondeo and an MG Rover were in collision about half a mile south of the M50 junction at 1.05am.

An HGV then stopped and was involved in a collision with a silver Mercedes and black Mazda.

Two occupants from the Mercedes died at the scene and a further two occupants were seriously injured - one was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and one to Southmead Hospital in Bristol. We are currently checking on their conditions.

None of the other people involved are believed to be seriously injured.

Investigation work is ongoing but the road will remain closed for some time as there is a considerable amount of debris and oil across all three lanes.

Two vehicles have already been recovered but the others remain at the scene at this moment.

Diversions are in place.
