Safer Community Team Profiles

PS Steve Wood

Since joining the Metropolitan Police in 1998 I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of roles ranging from a retail crime unit in Oxford Street to a Pan London unit working across North West London focusing on drug dealing and commercial burglary. I transferred to Gloucesterhire Constabulary in 2003, as having grown up locally wanted the opportunity to police the area in which I lived. I am now responsible for the Safer Community Team at Gloucester South INA, where I work alongside nine Police Constables and seven Police Community Support Officers, four of the PC’s are funded directly by Gloucestershire County Council and this means they are additional to the budgeted staffing levels for Gloucestershire Police. Therefore their duty time can be spent dedicated to the Gloucester South INA. The other members are dedicated to a proactive unit which has been set up in recent months to focus on issue's that are directly effecting resident's of Gloucester South INA. We work very closely with other agencies to deliver services to our communities and we endeavor to ensure that we are as accessible as possible to these residents.

If you have a non emergency matter that you wish to discuss I can be contacted on  0845 090 1234 or e-mail at glossouth-sct@gloucestershire.police.uk

PC Fraser Mackie

I joined the police at the age of 21 in Newbury, Berkshire.  As a Thames Valley Police officer I did my first two years on the beat around the towns of Thatcham and Newbury, but covering other surrounding villages such as Aldermaston, and West Ilesley, where Her Majesty stables her horses.  I transferred to Avon & Somerset in 2000, patrolling the former mining town of Radstock/Midsomer-Norton before progressing into plain clothes patrolling and major operations around the cities of Bath and Bristol. A talent at pursuing suspects led me to the Robbery Squad in Bristol for 3 years, racking up lots of overtime and custodial convictions for some of the cities most violent offenders. Following marriage and becoming a father, I joined Gloucestershire police in 2008, and the Safer Community Team from January 2009.  I am responsible for the areas of Quedgeley, Hardwicke, Longney and Elmore.  I have responsibility for gathering community concerns, and then addressing those issues raised.  In the long term, I look to prevent problems before they emerge, working with partnership agencies to achieve these aims.  I want to make myself well known around these parishes, by frequently attending parish council meetings, patrolling in and around Severnvale School where I hold a governors position, as well as assisting my colleagues wherever necessary.

For non-emergency issues, I can be contacted via the switchboard telephone number, 0845 090 1234 or e-mail glossouth-sct@gloucestershire.police.uk.

PC Lucy Kay

I joined Gloucestershire constabulary in June 2006 at the age of 19 , after completing my initial training at Wheatstone house I was posted to Gloucester South Police station. I spent my first 3 years working on the front line in the response vehicle and enjoyed every second of it. I have recently returned from maternity leave and am now working as part of the Safer Community team. The area I am covering on the INA is Quedgeley. I am very much looking forward to getting out in the community and making a difference, although I enjoyed working in the response car I was only ever able to deal with incidents in the short term, The safer community team is all about dealing with issues both in the short and long term and this is what I am looking forward to most.

For non-emergency issues, I can be contacted via the switchboard telephone number, 0845 090 1234 or e-mail glossouth-sct@gloucestershire.police.uk.

PCSO Anna Wright

I joined Gloucestershire Constabulary back in February 2007 and have been based the whole time at Gloucester South Station. Before joining the police force I worked for the travel industry both home and abroad as a Holiday Representative and a Travel Agent. During my time at Gloucester South I have covered  Quedgeley, Hardwicke, Elmore, Longney and the new development of Kingsway . I have enjoyed working these areas and getting to know my local community and getting involved with a number of our local youth groups. I work in a team of four which includes PC Setter, PC Mackie and PCSO Hutton covering the Quedgeley area. I look forward to new challenges that my area may bring me.

You can contact me on  0845 090 1234 or by email: glossouth-sct@gloucestershire.police.uk

PCSO Lucy Webb

Like PCSO Wright I joined Gloucestershire Constabulary in February 2007 as a Police Community Support Officer. I was initially posted to Cinderford Station where I worked for over 3 years. The role of PCSO is very varied and I particularly enjoyed visiting the schools on my area and working with them to provide road safety advice and Tag Rugby Coaching. I held monthly surgeries with key members of my local community involving elderly residents and youths in how they wanted their area policed. I also held "meet your Community Leaders" events. This involved bringing all the agencies together that can help the public with any problems they may come across. I am looking forward to a fresh challenge at Quedgeley and I am keen to work with the community to tackle any issues they may have. Please stop for a chat with me whilst I'm out on patrol!

PCSO Lee Hutton

Hello, I am PCSO Lee Hutton of the Gloucester South Safer Community Team and I have recently been appointed PCSO for Quedgeley and Hardwicke along with PCSO Anna Wright, after being a named officer in Podsmead for the last two and half years.

During my time in Podsmead, I enjoyed being part of the community and dealing with the issues that the residents and shop keepers faced and being a visual presence in the area. I am now looking forward to providing the residents of my patch with my full attention and look forward to meeting the community on my patrols.

I am also responsible for Gloucester South’s ongoing Operation to combat truancy in the area. Anyone found truanting from school is returned and their parents informed. If they are caught on more occasions we then work with the Education Welfare Officer and deal with the family to resolve the issue. This has proven to be successful last school year, as there has been a dramatic drop in the number of young persons caught truanting, compared to the previous year.

If you see me out on patrol, please stop me for a chat or even a cup of tea would be nice and feel free to discuss any community issues you have.

If you have a group, or a meeting where you feel we could come along and give a talk please contact us on 0845 090 1234 or by email glossouth-sct@gloucestershire.police.uk

PC Lucie Koeltgen

I joined Cambridgeshire Constabulary in 1998 and was posted to Peterborough City Centre.  During my time in Peterborough I was an Immediate Response Driver and a Community Contacts Co-ordinator.  I was trained to deal with Public Order incidents and also to deal with victims of rape and sexual assault.  During my time in Cambridgeshire I also worked in the Crime Management Department, auditing the crime recording process. In 2003 I transferred to Gloucestershire to return to my home county.  I was posted to the Gloucester South Inspector Neighbourhood Area where  I worked as an immediate response driver for a couple of years before joining the newly formed Safer Community Team in 2005.  At that time there were just 2 officers on the team covering the whole of Gloucester South.  The team expanded fairly quickly and the Community Beat Officers on the team then took responsiblility for designated areas.  I was proud to become the allocated officer for the Podsmead area where I have remained.  I successfully completed my examinations for promotion to sergeant several years ago, however I enjoy my role and therefore intend to stay on the Safer Community Team for the foreseeable future.  As the local officer of Podsmead, it is a pleasure to work with the local community together with my colleagues, PCSOs Sylvia Lane and Rob Gee.

For non-emergency issues, I can be contacted via the switchboard telephone number,0845 090 1234 or by email: glossouth-sct@gloucestershire.police.uk

PCSO Robert Gee

I joined the Gloucestershire constabulary in November 2006 as a PCSO police Community Support Officer in 2006 my first placement was in Cinderford which is a very rural area which has its own unique set of problems then after two and a half years of rural policing I’m now stationed at Quedgeley I’m looking forward to getting involved with the community here in Podsmead. I have already become the signal point of contact for disabilities for the Safer Communities Team, and I’m also building links within the community on an almost daily basis.

You can contact me on  0845 090 1234 or by email glossouth-sct@gloucestershire.police.uk

PCSO Sylvia Lane

I joined Gloucestershire Constabulary in February 2005 in the newly formed Witness Care Unit after working for Victim Support in Gloucester Crown and Magistrates Court. The Witness Care Unit was founded to help and support witnesses through the difficult court process. Although being a Witness Care Officer was a very rewarding job I felt I wanted to be out and 'hands on' in the community and took up the challenge of the PCSO role in July 2006. I was posted to Cinderford station where I spent two happy years until transferring to Gloucester South where I have been for the last two years serving the people of Podsmead.

You can contact me on  0845 090 1234 or by email: glossouth-sct@gloucestershire.police.uk

PC Sam Jones

I have served as a front line police officer with Gloucestershire Constabulary for seven years. During that time I have worked on the response car at both Barton Street and Gloucester City stations. I moved to the Gloucester South INA in September 2009 where I have joined the SCT. My particular area of responsibility is the new Kingsway Urban Village.

Please contact me on  0845 090 1234 or by email: glossouth-sct@gloucestershire.police.uk

PCSO Debbie Brimfield

Hi my name is Debbie Brimfield, I am a Police Community Support Officer for Gloucester South.  The patrol area that I cover is the new Kingsway estate. I have been a PCSO for three years, my initial posting of a PCSO was Gloucester City centre, but in September 2009 I transferred to Quedgeley Police station. My time was spent in the City Centre patrolling and visiting the shops, getting to know the local community and helping them with any issues that they experienced in their area. I wrote an article once a month for the Gloucester Cathedral magazine, which also gave the community and parishioners of the Cathedral an update of what I was achieving in their areas. I organised many Street surgeries in the community, this enabled me to introduce myself to residents, and for me to get to know my community in person. If you see me out on patrol, please stop me for a chat or even a cup of tea would be nice and feel free to discuss any community issues you have.

If there are any issues in your neighbourhood area that you would like to discuss with me, please feel free to contact me on  0845 090 1234 or via email glossouth-sct@gloucestershire.police.uk

PC Emma Macdonald

I joined Gloucestershire Constabulary in June 1997 after working in London while completing my A-Levels. I was initially stationed at Barton Street firstly on foot patrol and then in the response car after I had completed my standard driving course. In 1999 I moved to Tuffley Police Station again covering the response car which I thoroughly enjoyed, during this time I was also a tutor constable and tutored a number of officers at the beginning of their careers. In 2001 I was asked to undertake the role of the Intelligence Development Officer for the Tuffley area which required me to take an active role in the planning of operations for issues arising in the area and the obtaining and execution of numerous search warrants. I continued in this role until I returned from maternity leave in 2005 and joined the Safer Community Team as a proactive officer. I moved across to the community side of the SCT in 2007/2008 when I became the community beat officer for the Tuffley and Grange Parish.  Being a community beat officer is a role I am thoroughly enjoying and one I hope to remain in for the foreseeable future.

You can contact me on 0845 090 1234 or by email: glossouth-sct@gloucestershire.police.uk

PCSO Sam Knowles

I Joined Gloucestershire Constabulary in January 2006. At the age of 16 I left school and started a hairdressing apprenticeship, I then progressed to managing a salon in the Cotswolds. Having left the hairdressing industry I became an admin assistant. During this time I realised that I wanted to work closely within a community, helping people and solving neighbourhood issues. Initially I wanted to join the Constabulary as a police officer but having looked into the role of a PCSO I decided to apply and get a taste of policing. I am now the designated officer for the Tuffley area, working alongside PC Emma Macdonald and PCSO Noel Baadjes. I am the main point of contact for Russet House School and am heavily involved with Tuffley Primary School and St Peters School. If you see me out on patrol, please stop me for a chat or even a cup of tea and feel free to discuss any community issues you have.

If you have a group, or a meeting where you feel we could come along and give a talk please contact us on 0845 090 1234 or by email: glossouth-sct@gloucestershire.police.uk

PCSO Noel Baadjes

In 2002 I joined the Gloucestershire Constabulary as a Traffic Warden in 2003 and in 2004 decided to change roles and applied for the PSCO role where I have successfully became a familiar face in the Stroud town centre. During my six years in Stroud I established close links with the community and this resulted in a prize being allocated to residents on one council estate .I also received a recognition of quality service award in June 2007 from the then serving Chief Constable Dr Tim Brain. However it was also a busy time for me in November 2008 when my partner and we had an addition to the family the birth of our baby boy. I decided to transfer to Gloucester South Police Station where I am currently placed with the Tuffley Homebeat area with PC Macdonald the area beat manager and PCSO Knowles.I feel that I am making a positive contribution to providing a dedicated service to the residents in my homebeat area with the team in Glos South SCT when dealing with issues. I am also trained in conducting crime reduction surveys as part of the Safer Homes initiative.

I can be contacted on 0845 090 1234 or by email: glossouth-sct@gloucestershire.police.uk

Deliberate Action Team

PC Jason Salter

I was posted to the Gloucester South INA in 2005 when I joined the Gloucestershire Constabulary. My first role was that of a frontline response officer working directly from Quedgeley police station responding to all number of incidents and emergencies both within the INA and throughout the city of Gloucester on a 24/7 shift pattern. I performed this exciting and often chaotic role for 4 years. In August 2009, I commenced my present role as a member of the newly formed Deliberate Action Team. Within my current role, I provide a proactive law enforcement response to tackle crime trends and community issues within the INA to compliment the work performed by the established Safer Community Team. Having worked all of my police career at Quedgeley police station, I have acquired a thorough understanding of the local criminal fraternity and the adverse effects of crime on our community.

If you have a non emergency matter that you wish to discuss I can be contacted on  0845 090 1234 or by e-mail at glossouth-sct@gloucestershire.police.uk

PC Anthony Richards

Since joining the Gloucestershire Police in 2001 I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of locations within the force. Throughout my time I have spent 5yrs working in the Forest of Dean as a response officer and area officer focusing on dealing with local crime effecting the small communities of the forest,  Two years were then spent as a response officer in Barton Street dealing with members of public from all nationalities and religions and now more recently I have moved to Quedgeley where I  have taken up a role on the newly formed D.A.T (deliberate action team) when is made up of a small group of officers who actively target our local criminal element of society on a daily basis, which enables us and other officers the time to focus on issues surrounding the Gloucester South INA.

It had always been an ambition of mine to be a police officer and was extremely proud when I started working for Gloucestershire Constabulary in September 2004. I underwent the initial training, part in force and part in the Police Training College in Cwmbran. After my training I was temporarily based in Gloucester City centre before being stationed at Gloucester South INA. I worked for approx 5 years as a front line police officer responding to incidents varying from, thefts, burglaries, robberies assaults etc. I underwent additional training and attachments during this period including response driving, riot policing, burglary squad and prisoner processing. I have recently joined the Gloucester South Deliberate Action Team, part of the Safer Community Team. Our main role is to police proactively and target key problems for the community. My aim is to make Gloucester South INA the best policed area within the county. PC Andrew Cooper

I joined Gloucester Constabulary in November 2005 at the ripe young age of 21. It was always my ambition to join the Police Force and serve the community, helping deliver justice and providing public reassurance. I undertook my training at the Centrex Centre in Cwmbran. Since completing my training and passing my probation I have worked at Quedgeley, Gloucester. I have mainly worked as a frontline officer on the response vehicle, but other roles have included working in the prisoner process unit, and also working in the Gloucester South Safer Communities Team. I am currently working on the Deliberate Action Team in Gloucester South Police Station, which is a newly formed team that offers a more proactive role on the streets that helps to focus on issue's that are directly effecting resident's of Gloucester South INA. In the past few years I have passed a Police Standard Response Driving Course, a Police Support Unit Course and a Door Entry course along with various others. Two Men Plead Guilty to Harassment of Fish and Chip Shop Workers in Podsmead

July 26 2010

Two men who pleaded guilty to harassing fish and chip shop workers in Podsmead were given 12-month community orders and banned from entering the area at Gloucester Magistrate’s Court last week.

Dayne Hallahan, 19, of Kingsholm Road, Gloucester and Anthony Muggleton, 18, of Reservoir Road in Tuffley, were charged with harassing the owner of the Podsmead Fish Bar in Scott Avenue and two of his family members who also worked at the shop.

The two defendants were charged with the offence after many incidents of anti-social behaviour at the shop were reported during the early part of this year.

The incidents included the switching off of the power supply inside the fish bar while the business was open to the public, the removal of ceiling fixtures inside the premise, the tampering of the electrical supply outside of the shop to falsely activate the premise’s alarm, the persistent littering outside the fish bar, the throwing of snowballs at the premise and the verbal abuse of the owner's family.

Both the defendants pleaded guilty and received 12-month community orders and £30 fines. The court also approved a police application for a restraining order upon conviction preventing the two men from entering Scott Avenue, the Podsmead Playing Fields and the area surrounding the Podsmead Fish Bar for a period of 12 months.

PC Jason Salter, of Gloucester South Safer Community Team, said: “While it can be very challenging for the police to address isolated incidents of anti-social behaviour within the neighbourhood, this was clearly a prolonged attack upon the fish bar and the owner's family, who have shown remarkable resolve throughout.

“I hope that this result sends out a clear message to the local community that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated and that together we can take effective action.

“The restraining order will protect the victims from any future incidents and it is hoped that it will also help to promote safety for all within the Podsmead community."

Chief Constable Tony Melville, who visited the chip shop at the beginning of the year to talk about anti-social behaviour, said: “This is an excellent example of how, working together, we can help to make our communities safer places.

“I am really pleased with this outcome and hope it inspires others to help us to take similar action where required."

The Gloucester South SCT also said that there had been a 66% decrease in anti social behaviour incidents within the area since the investigation started, compared to the same period last year.

Kingsway School Kids Visit Police Headquarters

July 16 2010

A group of children from Kingsway Primary School visited county police headquarters in Quedgeley last week and met the Deputy Chief Constable (DCC) Mick Matthews.

During the visit, the pupils learned about the different work the police do, visited the control room and were shown around the Chief Constable’s office. They also went to see the force dog unit, were given a talk about the press office and given the chance to sit in a patrol car.

Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Debbie Brimfield, from Gloucester South Safer Community Team (SCT), said: “This was a return visit for the children because DCC Mick Matthews went to see them at Kingsway School earlier in the year.  All the children really enjoyed the trip and asked lots of interesting questions.

“Helping young people understand the work of the police in a fun way like this is so beneficial because it breaks down potential barriers with officers and lets the kids know we're here to help.”

Quedgeley Youngsters Explore Effects Of ASB

 July 15 2010

Young drama students from Linda Virgoe Dance Studios performed a play on the effects of anti-social behaviour (ASB) on all sections of the community at at the end of June.

The youngsters, who have been working with officers from Gloucester South Safer Community Team (SCT), presented the results of their reasearch in the production “asb 2day” at The Linda Virgoe Dance Studios in Quedgeley Enterprise Centre, Naas Lane.

PCSO Sylvia Lane said: “It is important youngsters understand the issues behind anti-social behaviour and the impact it has on other people in the community from residents to businesses, schools and the perpetrators of ASB themselves, so this type of work is important.

“The event was well attended by a large audience which included members of the public, local Councillors, Neighbourhood Co-ordination Group members, Neighbourhood Watch, Criminal Justice Department, Gloucester Housing Association and localYouth Groups.

“By coming together like this we and our partners will be able to understand what young people think and need and how we can reduce anti-social behaviour within the community.”

Entry to the event was free but donations were made to Miss Virgoe's chosen charity The Pied Piper Appeal.

Preventing Crime with Defensive Planting by PCSO Debbie Brimfield

Many residents ask what they can do to protect their properties. With the warmer weather upon us, many people are spending time in the garden, there are many plants that can be purchased from all garden centres, which can act as a deterrent to the opportunist thief.  According to Police statistics, the most likely items to be stolen are lawn mowers, strimmers, chain saws, hedge trimmers, and garden furniture. With careful planning and thought you can reduce the risk of becoming a victim of garden crime, whilst at the same time you can create an attractive garden. Property marking is advisable, SMART WATER kits can be purchased from any Police station, and this is a DNA type liquid, the kit contains signs that you attach to your marked property which makes  your property less attractive to the thief

For instance you can create an impenetrable hedge, which looks far more attractive than security fencing, but it is just as effective. Planting prickly shrubs around vulnerable windows can also serve as a deterrent to the burglar. Criminals do not like climbing through prickly plants and hedges, they know that a small item of ripped clothing or blood can help the Police identify them.

There are many plants that you can use to protect your property, i.e. PYRACANTHA, suitable for walls and fences, BERBERIS VERRUCULOSA, also suitable for walls and fences, there are many more plants that are suitable, which a good garden centre will stock.

The use of gravel on the approach to the house gives away the thieves presence, thieves don’t like to be heard, and good lighting around the property will enhance your garden, extend its use into the evening, and be a major deterrent to the thief. The best type to install is low level lighting on a dawn to dusk sensor which will give goo illumination, is cheep to run and is on all night, security lighting can increase the fear of crime, in high winds it will go on and off, this could also be annoying to your neighbours.

Keep Safe Scheme by PCSO Robert Gee

Hello, my name is Robert Gee, I’m a PCSO at Quedgeley and I have been stationed here for almost a year now. Other than my normal duties within the local community and dealing with antisocial behaviour recently I have been involved in setting up a Keep Safe Scheme. This is for individuals with learning disabilities and vulnerable people who are being bullied and become victims of crime.  The Keep Safe Scheme will involve various premises from shops, libraries, to café’s. These premises will be placing a “Safe Place“ sticker in the window so people needing the scheme know where to go if in need. They will be carrying a card about the size of a credit card with their name and appropriate contact phone number on it so that members of staff in these premises, who have been trained, will be able to assist the person or persons that maybe in distress. These staff members can also call the police to make them aware if an incident needs dealing with. I have been visiting a youth club for people with learning disabilities with the aim to breaking down barriers and getting to know these individuals as some are afraid of the police. This will be a long and slow process but one I’m willing to take on. I have been asked to become a governor at The Spring Centre which provides care and support for children and young people with special needs and disabilities and their families from across Gloucestershire.

Operation Dismount Returns by PCSO Anna Wright

Operation Dismount is returning to Gloucester South INA this summer! With the lighter evenings and an increase in bicycle users, its time to battle anti-social cycling. Operation Dismount is aimed at targeting dangerous, inconsiderate and careless cycling and was designed after a number of complaints were received from our community and concerns for the safety of cyclist's. Operation Dismount has been running fully now for just over 2 years and we have had some great success. During the summer months we will be holding a number of planned operations to help with this. We have a team of 4 Police Community Support Officers who are trained to patrol on bicycles and who will be assisting us in the running of Operation Dismount. We will be stopping cyclist’s who are showing signs of dangerous, inconsiderate and careless cycling as well as riding on the pavement or carrying more than one person. We will be offering the offenders road safety courses, words of advice, fixed penalty tickets and, in extreme cases, prosecution. Each  will be dealt with on the severity of the case. In the last two years we have run Operation Dismount a number of Road Safety Courses have been carried out by PCSO Lee Hutton who has received specialist training in order to provide these courses. The courses have been very successful with the offenders not going on to re-offend and learning a number of new skills to protect them and the motorist whilst on the busy roads of Gloucestershire.

Gloucester South SCT Report Progress On ASB And Speeding To Community Panel

July 2 2010

Police in Gloucester South Safer Community Team (SCT) reported back on their progress in tackling local policing priorities to members of the community panel at a meeting last week.

Since June last year, the SCT have been focussing their efforts on concerns from local people about speeding vehicles along the Bristol Road and Green Lane in Hardwicke and anti-social behaviour in Kingsway, Hardwicke and Quedgeley.

Assisted by officers from the road traffic department and by officers from the Special Constabulary, various operations have been held on both Bristol Road and Green Lane during the last year in order to gauge how many people are speeding and raise awareness of the consequences of speeding to those caught.

The results of the operations showed that the average speed of vehicles in these areas was actually below or only slightly above the legal limit. The Parish council are now talking with other partner agencies about improved signage and altering the road layout.

In targeting ASB, police have increased patrols and taken action intended to improve the situation in the long-term.

Police and partners established a regular youth club at Hardwicke Village Hall run by the Equals team and assisted by parish councillors.

In Quedgeley, police and partners secured further funding for Equals Youth Club while in Kingsway, officers helped relocate the temporary youth shelter, known as the YouthPOD, to Kingsway Primary School so that it can continue to operate.

Police will continue to monitor progress on both issues but as a result of the progress made it was decided that they would no longer be treated as priorities.

Gloucester South SCT Police Sergeant Steve Wood said: “I’m delighted with the progress that has been made over the last year with these priorities and I hope it makes the public feel as though we are listening and acting on their concerns.

“We are still committed to long-term action on ASB and will continue to operate patrols where ASB is a problem but the fact that the panel has decided to downgrade the issue from a priority is testament to how far we have come.

“In terms of speeding, our speed operation results have helped convince the panel that their concerns may be best addressed with our other partners.”

Kids Learn About Effects Of Speed And Alcohol In Gloucester South SCT Road Safety Op

June 23 2010

Police from Gloucester South Safer Community Team (SCT) have teamed up with the Road Safety Partnership for an innovative session to help pupils understand the effects of speed and alcohol on driving.

Year 7 and Year 9 children from St Peter’s School were given presentations, checked their reaction times, held speed checks and even got to try out a special pair of booze googles, which simulates the effect of alcohol, during the lesson.

PC Emma MacDonald said: “This is vital work to ensure more responsible drivers and safer roads in the county in the future.

“By engaging with the kids in a fun and practical way and at the same time getting across a powerful message about road safety, these sessions have proved both effective and popular.

“They also give us a chance to break down barriers with local children and build trust and confidence in the force.”

Road safety officers Rosemary Bailey and Sarah Laming said: “Over the course of the two days, we were able to speak with over 250 pupils about in-car safety and pedestrian issues. And the goggles, which alter the person’s perception of their surroundings, are really effective”.

Gloucester South SCT Help Transform Quedgeley To Hardwicke Underpass

 June 23 2010

Police from Gloucester South Safer Community Team (SCT) are helping to transform the underpass linking Quedgeley and Hardwicke, under Fieldcourt Gardens.

With the help of Quedgeley Community Trust, officers have already applied a white base coat of paint, giving the previously dark, stained walls a cleaner look.

Part two of the transformation takes place tomorrow, when students from Severnvale School will add their own colourful designs to the wall.

PC Fraser Mackie said: “The terrible state of the underpass was an issue that was raised with councillors and police recently so we decided to address it.

“It’s hoped that as the teenagers are doing the designs themselves, the changes will last longer and the local community will have an underpass they don’t have to be embarrassed about.

“Passers-by have already said how brighter and bigger the underpass looks because of our work.

“We hope actions like this will make local people feel more confident in us, and safer in the area they live.”

You Said We Did - 16 Motorists Reprimanded In Quedgeley Operation After Concerns Raised

June 15 2010

Gloucester South Safer Community Team (SCT) ran an operation last week to monitor the standard of driving in Quedgeley and reprimanded 16 people for motoring offences.

The operation was in response to concerns raised by local residents at a recent community panel meeting.

PC Fraser Mackie, of Gloucester South SCT, explained: “We listened to the replies from the general public and concerns over the standard of driving in Quedgeley and while no one location came up and no one type of offence was identified, it was obviously something people felt strongly about.

“The panel wanted a response from us and a visible presence, so the road policing unit joined me on my beat and we set out to monitor the behaviour of those driving in Quedgeley.”

During the operation on one day last week 14 motorists admitted to not wearing a seatbelt and were given a £30 fine while two people admitted using a mobile phone while driving and were given a £60 fine and three points on their license.

PC Mackie said: “The number of drivers not using seatbelts was obviously concerning because it puts them at serious risk but there were at least no drivers breaking the speed limit, which is reassuring.

“I hope this action will make local people confident that we are listening to them when they tell us what is concerning them. I also hope it encourages more people to come to community meetings and get involved in shaping the areas we target as their local police.

“We will continue to look at the issue and do more of these operations if the community tell us they want us to.”

Update On Progress To Curb Anti-Social Behaviour In Tuffley

The Gloucester South team is seeking to reassure Tuffley residents that anti-social behaviour in the area is being tackled following public concern recently.

County Council-funded Police Constable Emma McDonald, who works in the Tuffley community, said: “Since the local priorities were set, SCT officers have been working tirelessly with our partner bodies to ensure anti-social behaviour, particularly in Ivory Close, is reduced.

“We immediately held a street surgery there and the residents were spoken to in to order establish the times activity was occurring and identify those responsible. A letter drop was also conducted to ensure we reached as many people as possible.

“This enabled us to speak to the young people responsible and meetings were arranged with them and their parents.  Foot patrols in the area were also increased.

“Following on from this a referral was made to the Family Intervention Project in regard to a specific family identified as the main perpetrators. In addition to this we worked with Gloucester City Homes to identify and educate one of the young people responsible and send this person on a workshop for persons committing anti-social behaviour."

Amongst other projects already underway or ongoing includes a joint scheme with Gloucester City Homes at Beaufort Community School. It will involve a number of workshops with pupils and victims of anti-social behaviour to highlight the impact it can have on the community and the possible consequences for those caught doing it, which can be a criminal record and diminished job opportunities in the future.

The next Tuffley police panel meeting will be held at Beaufort Community Centre at 6pm on Thursday ,May 27 and all local residents are invited so they can hear an update on police progress and express any concerns they may have.
