Getting The Ball Rolling- Tag Rugby 2010- Forest South

Officers from the Forest South Safer Community Team along with the Street Wardens have recently finished their training programme through Gloucestershire Police in conjunction with the Rugby Football Union to introduce tag rugby into schools.

The objective is for the officers to promote the ‘Tackle Safely’ campaign, which highlights personal safety for youngsters through the enjoyment of playing rugby. It is designed to illustrate the dangers surrounding them on the pitch i.e. not to be tagged, to those dangers outside of school, and how to keep safe whatever they are doing. The tag rugby programme also encourages fair play and teamwork.

Officers from the SCT will be selecting schools in the area ready for the tournament at Cinderford rugby club.

Forest South- Coffee Morning At Aylburton

PCSO Dan Wilce went along to Aylburton Methodist Church on Saturday 21st February 2010 to provide crime prevention advice to local residents who went to the coffee morning. While he was there he explained what the Safer Community Team does and handed out the latest Community Policing newsletter. He also handed out free shed alarms and leaflets to reinforce his message about keeping the home and property safe.

Follow some of his simple tips and advice to reduce the possibility of becoming a victim of crime.

  • Don't leave valuables on display where they can easily be seen through a window

  • Photograph items of jewellery, antiques and other items that may be difficult to describe.

  • Always back up home computer records on disc and store them safely in case the computer is stolen.

  • Mark valuable items with an indelible marker with your post code

  • Consider purchasing a safe for storing valuables

  • Don't keep large amounts of cash at home

  • Dispose of all receipts and utility bills carefully to avoid criminals using your identity

If you would like to receive further crime prevention advice or have any questions please contact your local Crime Prevention Officer Bob Lloyd at bob.lloyd@gloucestershire.police.uk or via 0845 090 1234.

Police Introduce Lydney Dispersal Order- Forest South

The Forest South Safer Community Team (SCT) is introducing a dispersal order to tackle anti social behaviour in an area of Lydney.

The order, which will run from 18th February 2010 until 17 August  2010, is being introduced in response to an increase in reports of groups behaving in an anti-social way and intimidating local residents and shoppers.

The dispersal order will cover the area bounded by Highfield Road, Albert Street, Springfield Road, Springmeadow Road, Forest Road, Hill Street, High Street, Church Road, and the Lydney by-pass.

The order will allow police or Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) to direct any groups of two or more to leave the area for 24 hours when they believe the behaviour of the group is likely to result in members of the public being harassed, alarmed or distressed.

Anyone who remains in the area or returns after being told to leave could find themselves in a police cell and facing a fine of up to £5,000 or up to three months imprisonment.

The order also prevents anyone under the age of 16 from being within the boundary covered by the dispersal order between 9pm and 6am unless with a parent or responsible person over the age of 18. Anyone under 16 found in the area may be taken home or to an alternative place of safety.

Officers from the Forest  South SCT will be speaking to residents and business owners over the coming days to explain the dispersal order and to encourage them to contact the police if they witness anti-social behaviour within the dispersal zone.

Inspector Chris Thorley, of the Forest South Inspector Neighbourhood Area, said: "The dispersal order is a powerful policing tool and will allow us to tackle disorderly behaviour within the town.

“We know over the recent weeks that the conduct of groups gathering in and around the town has made people feel fearful and intimidated and from Friday 26th February we'll be able to ask such groups to leave the area before trouble starts.”

He added: “The use of this power is targeted on those people whose behaviour has resulted in or is likely to result in people being intimidated, harassed, alarmed or distressed. This will not affect people going about their normal business.”

Secure it with Spiky- Forest South

Gloucestershire Constabulary, along with the Crime Disorder Reduction Partnership, have launched the PLANT IT SAFE campaign at Coinros garden centre in Lydney.

The campaign is designed to make children aware of some of the defensive measures there are available for protecting both their gardens, and their schools.

Pupils from Severnbanks school in Lydney chose the name Spiky for the character, which will appear on all the plants that are defensive friendly.

PCSO Peter Timmins from the Forest South SCT, and PCSO Lucy Webb from the Forest North SCT will spearhead the campaign and are in the process of arranging visits to all primary schools in the Forest of Dean.

PCSO Timmins said "making the children aware of defensive planting in schools will help them identify vulnerable areas in  their own gardens, example being around the garden shed and around the schools they attend. The children can then point out the suitable plants to their parents, when they visit the garden centre, as all plants recommended by the Constabulary and CDRP, will have a Spiky sticker attached. This will help children educate their parents on what plants are best to use, and in turn make their gardens and out buildings safer"

Gloucestershire County Council Contact

Gloucestershire County Council Contact – Becky Ledger

As The Area Lead Officer for the Forest of Dean – South area I am responsible for the County Council issues which arise at neighbourhood police meetings in Coleford, Lydney and Sedbury. These issues could be things such as potholes, street lighting, recycling, road conditions and more. It is my role to pick up issues from the meetings and take them back to the County Council to see what can be done to address them. I ensure that the right contacts from the County Council are engaging with the communities to address issues of concern with the local residents. Through working in partnership with the Forest of Dean Safer Community Team and the Forest of Dean District Council I hope to really make a difference to people’s lives and the area they live in. I am attending community meetings and liaising with partners and community members in between meetings where necessary.
