Junior community officers 'stranger danger play'

Junior Community Officers {JCO's}

Our current team of JCO's have been working on various topics during February and March 2010 from security marking of school equipment to looking for items which might need removing from their local community from litter to larger items which they will inform the local council about. Recently the JCO's made local residents aware of the problems which dog fouling has on the neighbourhood by means of an information leaflet drop.  The JCO's will continue with their local work through until the Easter Holidays.

New Policing Priorities.

PC MARK WILSON - at Dursley has recently set up a new [PIP] - Police Information Point at the Rose and Crown Inn at Nympsfield.  This is the latest addition to a growing number of PIP's which are located over the Dursley INA area!

I am currently working on a priority which our local Neighbourhood Panel set for us - this priority is centered around the night time economy in Dursley Town Centre. Our Safer Community Team in conjunction with Dursley shift officers and the dedicated special constables working from Dursley have commenced operation Torq. This operation is aimed at gaining better community intelligence from the community and partner agencies to better understand the problem.

To assist with this a further police operation, operation Mount Jolly has seen extra officer conduct high visibility patrols commenced on weekend evenings and mornings to provide reassurance to the community and deter antisocial behaviour.

Crime and crime related incidents continue to remain very low in the Dursley INA area and we look forward to this trend continuing through the Spring season.

PCSO CLAIRE SILCOX - is currently working with residents in the Coaley location to introduce a 'No Cold Calling' zone.  Further details on this idea will be posted here in due course.

PCSO ANDY TRING - at Wotton has been working with the local Neighbourhood Warden and Kingswood Parish Council.  They have all worked together to come up with ideas and obtain funding to improve facilities for young people and reduce anti-social behaviour in the village hall location.  PCSO Tring has also successfully obtained 20mph warning signs from Gloucestershire County Council which have been placed in various locations around the village to help reduce speeds.

PCSO MIKE TREBBLE - has been working with the after school youth club at the Vale of Berkeley College and taking part in various planned activities.  Along with the local Neighbourhood Warden - they are both working on 'Boat Watch' along the Sharpness Marina - a scheme similar to Neighbourhood Watch but aimed at the boating fraternity.

PCSO JAMIE STEPHENS - has recently attended Kingswood School with the local Neighbourhood Warden - Pete Wilson to teach children about road safety & they have also returned to teach children about 'Stranger Dangers' which was well received.  Both lessons were for the entire school!

Each Thursday they also visit Hillesley School to conduct sport lessons which are aimed at the upper school from ages 8 - 11.

Tree Dedicated To Berkeley PC, PCSO and Neighbourhood Warden

Superintendent Derek Jones, Inspector Steve Irvin, Phil Sullivan - Stroud District Council Berkeley Town Council are so pleased with the service that the local policing team and council have provided the community that yesterday, Thursday February 25, a tree was planted in their honour.

The commemorative tree was planted by Town Mayor Valerie Watts outside the Berkeley Police station in recognition of the work that PC George Sharpe, PCSO Mike Trebble and Stroud District Council Neighbourhood Warden Chris Acock have done for the community.

Speaking about the dedication Mayor of Berkeley, Valerie Watts, said; “George, Mike and Chris work extremely well together as a team, they have all been extremely helpful to the Council over recent years and more importantly they are an accepted part of the community by the residents and traders who are quite happy to stop and talk to them or ask advice which wasn't the case, say, ten years ago.

“We were delighted to recognise what they have done for the town and also that all three had received well deserved prestigious awards last year."

PC George Sharp and PCSO Mike Trebble both work within the Dursley police Safer Community Team (SCT) and are responsible for the Berkeley area.

PC Sharp said; "We hope this tree acts as a reminder of the work that the Dursley Police Safer Community Team and the Stroud District Council Neighbourhood Wardens do to support the community and keep the town a safe and pleasant place to live.

“It really is a team effort and we are very thankful to the Berkeley Town Council for marking the collaborative efforts of the police, the council and the local residents."

PCSO Trebble, added; "We're really honoured by this gesture from the Town Council and would like to say a big thank you to them and also to the local community for their continued support."

PC Sharp and PCSO Trebble work closely with the Stroud District Council Neighbourhood Warden for the area, Chris Acock. He said; “I am really pleased to be part of a team that is recognised by the leaders of our community to be making a difference, making our district a safe place to work live and visit.

“Berkley is one of the many lovely markets towns that the District Council Warden service and Gloucestershire Constabulary serves, in partnership, within the Stroud Safer Stronger Partnership; I deem it a real honour to be recognised in such a way.”

Dursley Schools Unit Projects Spring 2010

The schools unit have been busy working on a variety of projects at various schools within the Dursley INA. PCSO Claire Silcox and PCSO Andy Tring have been at Bluecoats School in Wotton Under Edge getting the Tag Rugby tournament under way. The pupils are really taking to the sport and there should be some good games to look forward to over the early Spring.

Our Junior Community Officers based at Sharpness Primary School have also been busy - they have recently carried out a very successful community litter pick along Oldminster Rd in Sharpness collecting several bags of rubbish. The JCO's have also made notes on items which are a danger to either young children or animals such as old bicycle wheels which will be passed to the local Stroud District Council Warden - Chris Acock to remove on their behalf. Both PCSO Mike Trebble and PCSO Claire Silcox are really pleased with the enthusiasm which the JCO's have showed for their community.

Dursley Primary School have also enjoyed an interactive lesson on 'Stranger Dangers' and 'Cops and Robbers' {a lesson aimed at the lower school}. The children were able to take their own fingerprints and place them on their own identity cards. They then took part in a lesson aimed at finding a missing item which was placed somewhere within their class. Finally the children enjoyed a look around one of the patrol cars.

PCSO Mike Trebble, PCSO Claire Silcox and Special Constable Kerri Blackwell have also just carried out a 'Stranger Danger' lesson for the entire upper school of Berkeley Primary School. Six pupils were chosen to put on their own 'Stranger Danger' production in front of their school. This production was put together in a matter of minutes, however, it was very well put together and put out an important message regarding strangers. The pupils then watched a DVD and were asked questions on Strangers. It was good to know how well the children were able to answer questions on Stranger Dangers and they were excellent crime busters too! The lesson ended with a look around a patrol vehicle

Scenes of Crime Visit Vale of Berkeley College

Vale of Berkeley College SOCO Visit

PCSO Mike Trebble invited both Richard Hadfield & Kevin Mason from the force Scenes of Crime department to visit the after school youth club which is held every Wednesday at the Vale of Berkeley College.

The pupils were able to see a Scenes of Crime patrol vehicle and all the kit which they carry.  The pupils also took part in interactive lessons learning how the team take footprints, fingerprints, and hand imprints which some of the pupils had placed for the team to discover.

The pupils were also able to ask many questions on the role of Scenes of Crime within the force and they all really enjoyed the visit.  Suitable items were left by the team for the pupils to remember the visit!

Dursley SCT security marking of saddles & tack

As the Dursley SCT falls within a mostly rural location, we are pleased to offer security marking of tack from Saddles to Bridles.  These items are of interest to criminals as they fetch high rewards for them. Tack which has been security marked can be traced back to the original owners, &, is less likely to be stolen by criminals.  We offer a variety of security marking, however, engraving your postcode onto leather saddles etc proves to be the most popular.  We also offer 'Smartwater' as an effective crime prevention method.  The cost of each property marking kit is £15.00, however the advantages of Smartwater are:

  • Stays on items for 100+ years, it can't be totally removed.
  • Marking liquid is unique to your property!
  • Criminals are afraid of it, criminals know that any items can be traced back to the original owners. {Smartwater warning labels are also provided as part of the kit}
  • Offenders will be checked in the custody suites for any signs of Smartwater.  There is no escaping this deterrent.
  • If you move home, you simply amend your registration details.  You don't have to re-code all your valuables.

For further information on Smartwater  please contact 01452 335694.

To arrange a security postmarking session {which is free, and, part of the service from your Dursley SCT} contact PCSO Mike Trebble on 0845 090 1234, or,

mailto:michael.trebble@gloucestershire.police.uk

For further information on our Cotswolds & Stroud 'Horse Watch' scheme, please contact ~ 01452 335694.

Finally, during recent Street Surgeries covering Berkeley Vale, Cam & Dursley, Wotton-under-Edge & area, we received a few concerns from horse riders.  Concerns were raised regarding the occasional vehicle travelling too fast past horse and rider.  Please bare in mind that vehicles travelling too fast past horse & rider could cause an accident!

  • When you see a horse ride on the road - slow down.
  • Do not sound your horn or rev your engine.
  • When behind a horse rider - give them plenty of room & be ready to stop at short notice.
  • When overtaking - pass wide & slow.

Bogus Callers & Village Agents Information

Fortunately 'Bogus Caller' crimes are quite low within the Dursley INA,  however, we have had a couple of incidents recently within the Newport area .  When they happen they cause extreme distress for the mainly elderly citizens who are the main victims of these horrible crimes.

Both 'Bogus Caller' & 'Distraction' crimes involve people knocking on your door with the intention of gaining entry to your property.  These crimes are often committed on vulnerable people & the offenders often work in teams of two or three, however, sometimes a solo person may pose as a trades person.

When somebody knocks on your door always check via a window or engage a security chain if you have one.  Ask to see their I.D. and you can request to take their card and phone the company direct.  This will confirm their I.D. to conduct their job, please remember, there are false I.D. cards in circulation.

A genuine caller will gladly assist with the above if you have any doubts.  When you are totally happy, only then should you invite somebody into your home.

A 'Bogus Caller' will pose as a trades person typically saying that they are from the Water Board {which does not exist now} or some other utility company.  Once they have your attention, they may then attempt to come into your home.

A 'Distraction' crime will usually involve one person getting you talking about buying goods off them or touting for home improvements whilst another person may be trying to gain entry to your property from the rear.

Remember if you have any doubt, never open the door and always call 999!  We also offer Free 'Crime Prevention' advice,  to arrange a visit,  please use a the contact form at the bottom of this homepage.

Your local 'Village Agent' can also do similar crime prevention visits where they might give general advice, but, contact police on your behalf with any further visits.  Village Agents assist elderly residents in rural locations within the Dursley INA. Village agents can assist with an endless list of things from getting grab rails installed to fixing security items around the home like door chains, spy holes and security mirrors.  Your local Village Agent can also look at benefits & pensions along with fire safety checks, home care, gardening & much more.   For further information, please contact the local agent for this area, Penny Smurthwaite on 0777 6245 726, or mailto:penny@villageagent.grcc.org.uk

Police Information Points

Police Information Points are set up in various locations over the Dursley INA.  They are very visible and in place for residents to pass information to local officers who look after their P.I.P.  They are also well stocked with crime prevention information along with any relevant 'local' information which is particular to the area where they are located.

You will find a black folder near the P.I.P  where you can place an item of concern straight into the folder.  Local officers check and sign after each visit and make sure information entered by residents has or will be dealt with.  Typically residents may have concerns about speeding vehicles/nuisance behaviour or concerns which might not be police related but can be passed onto  local council neighbourhood wardens to address such as dog fouling or local authority housing issues.
