Carer Sentenced to 30 Months Imprisonment for £11,000 Fraud

A carer from Tewkesbury will serve 30 months imprisonment after being found guilty of 12 counts of fraud.

59-year-old Maureen Blackwell of Canterbury Leys, Tewkesbury was found guilty of 12 counts of fraud by abuse of position on Thursday May 24 following a trial at Gloucester Crown Court.

Blackwell fraudulently obtained at least £11,000 between April 2010 and February 2011 from a 64-year-old woman she was employed to care for in Tewkesbury.

She was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment for each offence, to run concurrently.

DC Kate Sheppard, who was leading the investigation, said: “This woman callously stole a huge amount of money from a vulnerable person who trusted her”.

“The victim believed Blackwell had her best interests at heart but in fact she was only concerned with her own financial gain.

“I would like to thank this lady for her cooperation throughout this investigation, I hope today’s sentencing is some comfort to her.

“This sort of despicable behaviour will not be tolerated and we will do all we can to ensure that anyone who abuses their position of trust is brought before the courts.”
