Gloucestershire BikeSafe

BikeSafe is an initiative run by Police Forces around the United Kingdom who work with the whole of the biking world to help to lower the number of motorcycle rider casualties.

Police motorcyclists help members of the public become safer, more competent riders. They pass on knowledge, skills and experience and can help to increase ability and confidence, to get even more enjoyment from riding a motorcycle

During the season we assist other BikeSafe coordinators to speak with motorcyclists and "bridge the gap", this season so far we have been to Poole Biker night.... pictured below, the National Bikesafe event at The Heritage Motor Centre in September as well as attending most of the "Gloucestershire Biker Nites"....

Winter riding ....

Wear the right gear – warm in the cold and dry in the wet.

POWDER check your machine, including the efficiency of battery.

Ensure your visor / windshield / glasses etc are clean. Have you some way of cleaning them; a damp cloth for cleaning and a dry one for drying ?

Under normal journey times it is recommended that you take a break from riding every two or so hours. In cold weather consider reducing this interval, & warm up with hot drinks/hot food.

Always look well ahead, but even more so with winter riding and the different types of roads and conditions. Give yourself more time to react. Be aware of micro climates, especially where air can get underneath the road to cool it i.e. bridges or exposed roads.

Consider and plan for other road users who may not see you due to their windows not being cleaned, misted up, iced up. Adjust your position / speed to allow for this.

If you ride on snow remember that hides it potholes, road surface changes and other defects of the road.

Watch out when filtering. Vehicles “warm” the road they use and where we “filter” remains cold, resulting in longer stopping distances.
